When it comes to deciding on your college life, there is no question that ACT is important. You want to do everything you can to prepare for this test and perform well on it. However, there is actually a bit of a balance to strike between spending too little time preparing before taking the test and spending too long preparing and then running out of time to take the test. So is there a best time to take the ACT?
Below are some of the factors you can consider on deciding the ideal time to take your ACT:
Number of Times You are Going to Take the Test
ACT is administered six times a year in the US; February, April, June, September, October, and December. All of these administrations have the same level of difficulty and the same structure, and cover the same types of materials.
Some students take the ACT several times, beginning as early as freshman year. If you take the test once and are happy with your score, then there is no need for you to take it again. If you are not happy with your first score, you should plan to do some serious test prep in your weakest areas to bring up your score before taking it again.
Test Scheduled by the School
At a certain time of year, many schools administer the ACT for all juniors. You should find out if and when your school offers the test. Then if you plan to take it more than once, you can decide whether you will take the test once or twice before the school offering.
School Curriculum
Some students schedule the ACT while their knowledge about its four categories is still fresh. Trigonometry is the highest level of math on the test; however it is also one of the most difficult for most students. So it would be helpful if you will take the ACT right after taking Trigonometry—or any other subjects you are having difficulty with.
Other students decide to take the test only once during their senior year, so they will have learned as much of their high school curriculum as possible before taking it.
Academic and Extracurricular Calendar
The schedule of your ACT will also be influenced by your individual calendar of academic and extracurricular activities. You should avoid taking the ACT at a time when you are focused on other major exams or in the middle of a competition season for another activity.
College Admission
One factor in your decision will be your schedule for college applications. If you are applying early admission to any colleges, you will need your final test scores sooner.
